“Eleanor and Park” is a young-adult fiction novel written by Rainbow Rowell in 2013. Set in the late 80’s in Omaha, Nebraska.

Synopsis: “Eleanor & Park is the first young adult novel written by Rainbow Rowell, published in 2013. The story follows dual narratives, Eleanor and Park, two misfits living in Omaha, Nebraska in 1986.” (Wikipedia)

It tells about a story of Eleanor, the new red-head kid on the block, and Park, the laid-back Asian guy. They met on a school bus on Eleanor’s first day of school. They got along if not so well through comic books and mix tapes. This may be a kind of forbidden love story, just like Romeo and Juliet’s.

The novel discusses a lot of issues such as domestic and child abuse, bullying, and fat-shaming. (Wikipedia) I think this is one-of-a-kind story that tells how love isn’t always the answer, and you just gotta do what’s best for the both of you. There will always be obstacles that would try to ruin your relationship, but those problems do not break your love for each other. You may have ended your relationship, but your love for each other is yet to be broken. I truly love this novel, maybe because Park tried to fight for Eleanor; they helped each other for so many times and for so many reasons. It has a very serious touch, having said the themes and issues it has discussed, not like the other young-adult fiction novels that only cared about happy endings and all those mushy stuff. Oh, and did I mention that E&P didn’t have a happy ending? Yeah, it didn’t, which I liked, because I like the feeling of longingness it left me after I finished it. I’ve always wanted to read something tragic in the end, and Rainbow Rowell gave it to me. I loved how open-ended its ending was, but still tragic. It was sort of a cliff-hanger, but I felt relieved after. At least, Eleanor will no longer suffer from his step father’s abuse. But it definitely broke her relationship with Park. (spoiler alert)

I recommend Eleanor and Park to everyone, especially if you like tragic endings like I do, and if you’re a fan of comic books and mix tapes. Also, if you like Korean guys like I do.

Love and light,
Prei
